How it all started
A group of women began to meet regularly with the help of the
Children's Society community project with the overall aim of
improving the quality of life for women in the area.
An Opinion sampling was carried out to assess the need
for a Women's centre.
The Wendy House was established on the Redcar Road East
estate of South Bank.
Demand from women being so high, new premises were sought to
expand the services. The old activities centre was refurbished and the Women's Centre was born.
After a consultation process the Centre’s name was changed to
TeesValley Women's Centre.
In partnership with NACRO (funded by the Big Lottery) the Women's
Centre became part of the SWITCH project who's aim is to develop
community based support services for vulnerable women to help
promote confidence and progression by raising self-esteem and empowering
women to achiever their goals, breaking down barriers and providing
support to address their issues whilst promoting the value of
education, training & employment. TVWC was also granted 2 year
funding from The Corston Independent funders Coalition, to
run “The Reaches Project” in partnership with DTVPT to help
reduce offending behaviour and improve life skills.
TeesValley Womens Centre is a pioneering grass roots venture, providing a training and educational resource, employment advice, guidance, support and a drop in facility to tackle the social, community and economic issues and needs of girls and women in the TeesValley area, all supported by free crèche facilities for children 0-8 years.
